Why hybrid flooring suits Sydney homes

Sydney asks a lot of a floor. Humid summers, salt air near the coast, wet boots through the hallway in a June southerly, and a great deal of housing stock built on a concrete slab that moves just enough to upset a solid timber board. Hybrid flooring was built for exactly this: a rigid stone-composite core with a waterproof surface, so it will not swell, cup or gap the way laminate does once moisture gets underneath it. That makes it a sensible choice for the rooms most Sydney renovations start with — kitchens, laundries, hallways, and open-plan living areas that run straight out to a deck.

How much does hybrid flooring cost in Sydney?

Supply-only, our hybrid range starts at $29/m² and runs to around $80/m² for thicker boards, herringbone patterns and premium wear layers. As a rough guide for budgeting:

• Budget or high-traffic rental: $29–$39/m², 6.5mm, 0.3–0.5mm wear layer
• Most owner-occupier renovations: $40–$60/m², 7–9mm, 0.5mm+ wear layer with better acoustic backing
• Herringbone, wide plank and premium décors: $60/m² and up

Installation is quoted separately and depends on your subfloor, how much old flooring has to come up, and whether levelling is needed. Budget for underlay, trims and scotia on top of the board price, and allow 8–10% waste for offcuts — more if the room is an awkward shape or you are laying on a diagonal. Can you put hybrid flooring in a Sydney apartment?

Usually yes — but this is the question that catches people out, so it is worth getting right before you order. Most Sydney strata schemes set a minimum acoustic performance for hard flooring on upper levels, and your by-laws will name a figure, commonly an AAAC star rating or an L’nTw value. Much of our hybrid range is rated AAAC 6-star, which satisfies the majority of schemes, but the rating only holds if the specified underlay is used and installed correctly.

Two practical tips: sort out your by-laws and any owners corporation approval before you order, and ask us for the acoustic test certificate for the specific board you are considering — we can send it through. Turning up to a strata meeting with the certificate in hand is usually the difference between a yes and a six-week delay.

Can hybrid flooring go over existing tiles or floorboards?

Often, yes. Hybrid is a floating floor, so it does not need to be glued or nailed down and can go over most sound, level existing surfaces — including tiles, provided the grout lines are not too deep and the floor is flat enough. The usual rule is a tolerance of about 3mm over a 2m straight edge; beyond that you will need a levelling compound. What it cannot do is fix a subfloor problem. If you have rising damp, drummy tiles, or a slab that is still curing, deal with that first — laying a waterproof floor over a wet slab traps the moisture rather than solving it.
