The floorplan reader needs the proxy plugin installed. This page checks for window.TFG_FP and routes through /wp-json/tfg/v1/floorplan when it’s there, falling back to a direct API call for preview only. Install tfg-floorplan-proxy.php and put the key in wp-config.php before publishing — without it the reader won’t work on the live site, and an API key in front-end code is a key anyone can take.

This page prices labour, not materials. Confirm before publishing whether that split matches how TFG actually quotes — if installation is normally bundled with supply, the wording here and in the estimator needs to say so, and the rate card needs to include the material component. Laying rates for hybrid, engineered timber, vinyl plank, carpet and carpet tile are set. Laminate, bamboo and both glue-down rates are still assumptions.

Four things that move an installation price

Two quotes for the same floor can be $2,000 apart and both be honest. Almost always, it comes down to these.

How it’s fixed down

Floating over underlay is the quickest. Glue-down and direct-stick take longer, need more prep and cost noticeably more per m² — but they’re required for some products and some subfloors.

What’s already on the floor

Pulling up carpet is easy. Lifting glued vinyl or tiles is slow, dusty work, and the waste has to go somewhere. This line alone can swing a quote by thousands.

How flat the slab is

Manufacturers specify a tolerance, usually around 3mm over 2m. If the slab is outside it, the floor will move or creak. Levelling compound is cheap; ignoring it isn’t.

The finishing details

Skirting, scotia, door bars, undercutting doors, stairs. Small items individually, but they’re the most common thing missing from a cheap quote.

These figures come from the rate card, so they update when the rate card does. Hybrid, engineered timber, vinyl plank, carpet and carpet tile now use TFG’s own rates. Four are still assumptions and need setting: laminate, bamboo, engineered glue-down and vinyl glue-down. Change them in the staff panel (?admin=1), then write the values into DEFAULTS so customers see them too.

Installation FAQs

Why is one quote so much cheaper than another?
Usually because something has been left out. The three items most often missing are removal and disposal of the old floor, subfloor levelling, and the finishing trims. Ask every quote to itemise those three and the gap normally closes.
Can you lay over my existing tiles?
Often yes, for a floating floor, provided the tiles are sound, well bonded and flat enough. It saves the cost of removal and the mess. It does raise the floor height, which affects doors and thresholds. We check this at the measure.
Do I need acoustic underlay?
If you’re in an apartment, almost certainly — most strata by-laws set a minimum rating and you can be ordered to pull the floor up if it doesn’t comply. In a house it’s optional, but it improves comfort underfoot and most manufacturers require some underlay for the warranty on a floating floor.
How long will it take?
A typical three-bedroom home with a floating floor is one to two days for the laying. Add a day if the old floor has to come up, and a day if levelling is needed, since the compound has to cure before anything can go over it.
What if there’s asbestos under my old vinyl?
Stop, and don’t let anyone break it up. Vinyl and its backing from before the 1990s can contain asbestos. It needs testing, and removal by a licensed asbestos remover — not a flooring installer. We’ll flag it at the measure if we see something suspect.
Is the estimate what I’ll actually pay?
It’s close for a straightforward job. What moves it: a subfloor needing more levelling than expected, difficult access, unusual room shapes with a lot of cutting, and anything discovered once the old floor comes up. All of it gets quoted in writing before work starts.
