Topgrain Oak Timber Flooring Review

Hurford Genuine Oak Caramel engineered timber flooring

Topgrain Oak is a mid-priced engineered European oak floor that turns up regularly in Australian renovations. We do not stock it, which makes this an easier review to write: we have installed it for customers who supplied their own boards, we have pulled it up in a couple of renovations, and we sell several ranges that compete with it directly. Here is what we have seen.

What Topgrain Oak is

It is a floating or direct-stick engineered floor: a real oak veneer bonded to a multi-ply core, pre-finished at the factory with a low-sheen lacquer or oil, in the familiar 190mm-wide, 1900mm-long format that most engineered oak now uses. The colour palette is the usual spread of naturals, smoked browns and washed greys. Thickness and veneer depth vary by range, so check the spec sheet of the exact board you are quoted rather than trusting the brand name.

What we like

  • Authentic oak grain. The veneer is genuine sawn oak with proper cathedral grain, knots and mineral streaks. It reads as timber from across the room and up close, which a printed laminate never quite manages.
  • Stable core. The multi-ply construction sits flat through Queensland humidity swings far better than solid oak, provided it is acclimatised properly before laying.
  • Easy to live with. The factory matte finish hides dust and small scratches well. Sweeping, vacuuming and an occasional damp mop with a timber cleaner is all it needs.
  • Straightforward install. Tongue-and-groove edges glue down cleanly or float over underlay, and the boards are milled accurately enough that rows pull up tight without fighting.

What to watch

  • Veneer thickness. Some Topgrain boards use a thinner wear layer than premium ranges. Under 3mm you will get one light re-sand at most over the life of the floor; 4mm and above gives you two or three. Ask before you buy.
  • Finish hardness. Oiled boards look beautiful but mark more easily than a UV-cured lacquer and need re-oiling every few years in busy rooms.
  • Colour variation. Character-grade oak varies plank to plank by design. Open three or four boxes and rack the boards before laying so the variation is spread evenly.
  • Warranty and supply. Because it is sold through a limited dealer network, replacement boards and warranty claims can be slower than with a brand that has a national distributor.

How it compares to what we stock

On a like-for-like board, Topgrain sits in the same bracket as the ranges in our engineered timber flooring range. Hurford Genuine Oak gives you a 14mm, 15mm or 20mm board with a 3mm to 6mm oak lamella, a seven-coat ultra-matte lacquer and a 25-year structural warranty from an Australian company. Preference Floors and Terra Mater WildOak cover the same colours at similar prices. If you are comparing quotes, line up veneer thickness, finish type, board width and warranty side by side, not just the price per square metre.

Verdict

Topgrain Oak is a solid, good-looking engineered floor that will serve a family home well if you buy the thicker-veneer boards and lay it on a properly prepared subfloor. It is not the cheapest oak on the market and it is not the most premium, and the same money buys an equivalent board from a brand with local support. Order samples of both and compare them in your own light before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

Is Topgrain Oak real timber?

Yes. It is engineered timber: a genuine oak veneer on a plywood or multi-ply core, so the surface is real wood.

Can Topgrain Oak be sanded and refinished?

Boards with a 3mm or thicker veneer can be lightly re-sanded once or twice. Thinner veneers should be treated as a pre-finished floor and protected rather than refinished.

Does The Flooring Guys sell Topgrain Oak?

No. We stock comparable engineered oak from Hurford, Preference Floors and Terra Mater, and we are happy to quote a supply-and-install price against a Topgrain quote.
