Hybrid, laminate and vinyl floors are engineered for busy Australian homes — but a few simple habits keep them looking new for decades. Here’s exactly how to care for them.
Everyday cleaning
Sweep, dust-mop or vacuum (hard-floor head, beater bar off) a couple of times a week to remove grit — grit is what causes fine scratching. Damp-mop with a well-wrung microfibre mop when needed. Use a pH-neutral floor cleaner; skip soap-based, wax or “polish” products, which leave a film that dulls the finish.
What to avoid
- Steam mops — heat and moisture can stress joints and void warranties.
- Excess water — even water-resistant floors don’t need a wet mop; damp is enough.
- Abrasives — scouring pads and harsh cleaners scratch the wear layer.
- Rubber-backed mats — they can discolour vinyl surfaces; choose breathable backings.
Protect the surface
Stick felt pads under furniture legs, use chair mats under office chairs, and put quality doormats at external doors. In sun-drenched rooms, curtains or UV window film slow colour change — and rotating rugs occasionally keeps any fading even.
Dealing with marks and spills
Wipe spills as they happen. Scuffs usually lift with a microfibre cloth and a little neutral cleaner; stubborn marks on hybrid or vinyl often respond to a soft white eraser. Never sand or “buff” a click floor — if a plank is badly damaged, individual boards can be replaced.
Carpet care in brief
Vacuum weekly, attend to spills immediately by blotting (never rubbing), and book a professional hot-water extraction clean every 12–18 months to keep warranties intact.
