When we compare the thickness of SPC Hybrid Flooring, the real thing you are looking at is the thickness of each component. Typically, most SPC Hybrid has a 0.5mm wear layer, so the remainder is the core and the backing. As with all flooring products, the Core is the most important thing for stability. A 6mm hybrid that has a 2mm underlay backing will have in general a 3.5mm core. A 6mm Hybrid with a 1mm underlay backing will have a 4.5mm core instead.
While this may seem like only 1mm, the reality is that as a product system, this becomes an almost 30% increase in the weight of the core making the entire product system more stability and has the ability to withstand direct sunlight than causes lesser products to fail.
So yes, thicker is better, but compare the core across the whole system, and not just the total thickness of the product.

Luxury vinyl flooring is constructed entirely from a synthetic material called polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC). PVC is heated and pressed into thin layers that are adhered to form vinyl tiles or planks.
Vinyl is durable, versatile, affordable and able to hold up to moisture and heavy foot traffic. It is often confused with other resilient flooring surfaces such as linoleum and laminate – and while luxury vinyl has similarities to laminate, there are significant differences in the construction of these products that set them apart from one another.

Unfortunately, most types of flooring are susceptible to damage from the sun. Over time, vinyl flooring can fade in direct sunlight. It’s recommended that you draw the curtains shut to protect your flooring during times of heavy sunlight.
As you can see, vinyl flooring makes a great choice for the heavily trafficked rooms in your home. With its durability, economical pricing, and simple maintenance, it’s a very popular choice for people who wish to improve the look of their home. And with the multitude of design options available, vinyl provides a number of attractive looks and finishes.

Vinyl flooring is available in planks and sheets/rolls. Each type has its own unique look and installation properties.
Vinyl Plank Flooring
The most popular vinyl flooring option is vinyl plank flooring. These planks typically mimic the look of solid hardwood, offering a warm, inviting and expensive feel to your home.
Today’s luxury vinyl planks even offer the texture and character of trending hardwood options, including handscraped and wirebrushed looks.
One of the major benefits to choosing vinyl plank flooring is the easy, approachable, DIY installation. Most vinyl plank options come as interlocking or “floating” floors and simply click together, similar to laminate. Other DIY options include loose lay (the easiest – just lay your floor down and you’re done!) and peel and stick.
For high-traffic and commercial installation, you can always glue down your vinyl planks for a permanent solution.
Pros of Vinyl Plank Flooring
- Gorgeous wood looks: Luxury vinyl plank flooring mimics all the most popular colors and textures of solid hardwood. In fact, most people can’t even tell the two apart.
- Easy, DIY installation: Most vinyl planks offer an easy interlocking or “floating” installation, perfect for most homeowners to do on their own without the help of an installation professional.
- Comparable to laminate, engineered wood and hardwood: Other types of vinyl flooring can’t truly compare with long-standing industry leaders like laminate and wood. Vinyl planks totally can.
- Easy to maintain: Vinyl plank flooring is super easy to take care of. Most options are water-resistant and many are fully waterproof. Just make sure you choose a thick wear layer to prevent scrapes and scratches.
- Waterproof options: Yes, 100% waterproof. They are awesome!
Cons of Vinyl Plank Flooring
- Doesn’t feel like real wood: To the touch, vinyl feels pretty different from solid hardwood. This feel is important to some homeowners.
- Price: As you move onto waterproof and luxury options, this can run you more than other wood-look options like laminate. But they come with a whole lot more bells and whistles!
- Low-quality planks scratch and dent easily. If you want a vinyl plank that can stand up to high traffic, family and pets, you’ve got to go with a high-quality plank with a thick wear layer. The cheaper options just won’t hold up.
Sheet Vinyl Flooring
Sheet vinyl flooring is commonly referred to as a vinyl roll, because…that’s exactly what it is! A big roll of vinyl flooring that you lay over your subfloor.
Vinyl sheet flooring is the original vinyl flooring option. It’s what people usually remember when they think about vinyl flooring.
Although it comes in a variety of looks, including wood and stone, this flooring is not quite as convincing as planks or tiles because it is in sheet form. However, vinyl sheet flooring is typically super affordable, which makes it a popular choice for commercial spaces.
Unfortunately, vinyl sheet flooring usually requires a professional installation using specific techniques that are not super approachable for the DIY homeowner.
Pros of Vinyl Sheet Flooring
- Inexpensive: There’s no question – sheet vinyl is the least expensive vinyl flooring option on the market.
- Wood and stone looks: And even more! The styles and designs in vinyl sheets are endless and many of them look really wonderful.
- Great for commercial spaces and large areas: Because you can cover a large space at a low cost, these babies end up being very popular in commercial environments.
Cons of Vinyl Sheet Flooring
- Not DIY-friendly: When it comes to installing sheet vinyl, we recommend you leave it to the pros.
- Looks aren’t as realistic as tiles or planks: While there are many nicer looking luxury vinyl sheets available, they won’t look quite as beautiful as planks or tiles.
- Doesn’t come in waterproof options: This is one of the main reasons to purchase vinyl – WPC and rigid core! Vinyl sheets don’t offer anything like that just yet.
- Not common in residential spaces: For the traditional homeowner, we recommend sticking to planks or tiles.

High-quality vinyl flooring is very durable. However, low-quality vinyl can be susceptible to rips and tears, and refinishing it can be a challenge. In particular, this is especially true if you are using sheet vinyl. Because vinyl flooring cannot be refinished, once damaged, it needs to be removed and replaced.

This is one area where vinyl tiling really shines. Maintenance tends to be a breeze. After sweeping your vinyl floor to remove dirt and grit, simply run a damp mop over it (using an approved vinyl floor cleaner) to keep your flooring looking its best. Most vinyl flooring has a “no wax” finish and will look just as shiny after mopping as the day that you bought it.

Laminate flooring is long-lasting and highly durable because of its four-level construction. The surface is made with aluminum oxide which is one of the hardest substances on earth and provides a very robust and wear resistant surface relative to other types of flooring. Laminate is ideal for active families, pets, and children, making it a great choice for heavy traffic areas.

Laminate floors are installed as a floating floor, meaning that they are not actually connected to the subfloor. The laminates lay on top of the subfloor and are cut during installation to allow an expansion gap around the edge of the flooring installation. Note: it is essential that space is left around the perimeter of the floor, as this allows the floor to expand and contract with changes in humidity and temperature throughout the year. Please consult your installation document for more details.

Laminate is highly durable, but in order to keep your floor looking as new as day one, there are protective measures you can take. We recommend applying protective furniture pads to the bottom of couches, tables, dressers or anything else on top of your laminate flooring. This measure of protection will help prevent scratches and keep your flooring looking brand-new. Additionally, we recommend using non-slip mats or area rugs to trap dust and debris upon entry. Please consult your installation instructions and warranty for more details.

In addition to protective measures, we recommend cleaning your floors regularly. You can sweep the area with a broom, dry vacuum, or microfiber mop to pick up any loose rocks, sand, or debris that could potentially scratch the surface of your laminate. For our AquaGuard and water-resistant laminates, you can also wet mop or steam mop the floors using an approved cleaner. For our HydroShield water-resistant product, you can wet mop. Be sure to look for laminate specific cleaning products, and avoid cleansers with lotions, waxes or conditioners, as these could leave greasy streaks and dull the appearance of your floors.

Smooth: Traditional Hardwoods are generally smooth. They don’t have any dimensional surface texture.
Wire-Brushed:This finish involves scraping the wood planks with a hard-bristled wire brush that pulls out the soft grain featured in the hardwood material. This process shows the natural beauty in your wood flooring.

Some species of hardwood are denser, therefore more durable than others, but overall hardwood is quite durable and has been used in homes and buildings for hundreds of years. Minor scratches in wood flooring can easily be repaired. For major scratches, planks can be replaced, or the floor can be refinished, adding to the length of the life of the hardwood floor.

Below are common installation methods for hardwood flooring. Please note that not all hardwood flooring is not considered Do It Yourself flooring and hiring a trained and certified professional installer is recommended. It is important to consider the substrate and product you are installing. Not all substrate surfaces allow for the varying installation methods. If you have additional questions, it is always good to consult a Flooring Professional or Floor & Decor associate prior to making your product selection.
Floating / Locking
[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What is a floating installation method?” open_toggle_text_color=”#88c4dd” closed_toggle_text_color=”#88c4dd” icon_color=”#88c4dd” use_icon_font_size=”on” _builder_version=”4.7.6″ _module_preset=”default” body_text_color=”#000000″ background_color=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” background_enable_color=”on” border_width_all=”0px” toggle_text_color=”#88c4dd” open=”off”]
Floating means the flooring is not attached to the sub-floor but adhered to itself typically through a locking mechanism along the sides of the board. The floor will “float” across the subfloor. This is typically the most Do It Yourself friendly installation method.

Before starting an installation, subfloor preparation is the key to the best possible installation. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and flat before beginning. Removing all dust or debris along with ensuring a smooth and flat substrate will allow for the best bond and prevent any structural issues long term.
